..... North Carolina is a state that is rich in history, diverse in culture, and blessed with boundless beauty from the Atlantic Ocean on the East across to the Great Smokie Mountains on the West. .....North Carolina is a state of many "FIRSTs". We would like to mention just a few of them before you begin your tour.

The FIRST English Colony in the "New World": Settled on Roanoke Island in the year 1585 and later known as the "Lost Colony" because the settlers vanished without a trace between 1585 and 1587.

The FIRST English child born in the "New World": Virginia Dare born in August of 1585.

The FIRST of the original thirteen colonies to openly declare that the colonies ought to be free and independent from England: The Halifax Resolves were signed and published April 12, 1776 in Halifax.

The FIRST State supported University: University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill established 1789.

The FIRST documented gold find in the United States: A 17 pound nugget found in Cabbarus County in the year 1799 and which set off the FIRST gold rush in 1802.

The FIRST powered air flight in the United States: Kill Devil Hills in 1903 by Wilbur and Orville Wright.
